Ebook About Questioning popular belief, a historian and re-examines what exactly led to the British Empire’s loss of the American Revolution. The loss of America was an unexpected defeat for the powerful British Empire. Common wisdom has held that incompetent military commanders and political leaders in Britain must have been to blame, but were they? This intriguing book makes a different argument. Weaving together the personal stories of ten prominent men who directed the British dimension of the war, historian Andrew O’Shaughnessy dispels the incompetence myth and uncovers the real reasons that rebellious colonials were able to achieve their surprising victory. In interlinked biographical chapters, the author follows the course of the war from the perspectives of King George III, Prime Minister Lord North, military leaders including General Burgoyne, the Earl of Sandwich, and others who, for the most part, led ably and even brilliantly. Victories were frequent, and in fact the British conquered every American city at some stage of the Revolutionary War. Yet roiling political complexities at home, combined with the fervency of the fighting Americans, proved fatal to the British war effort. The book concludes with a penetrating assessment of the years after Yorktown, when the British achieved victories against the French and Spanish, thereby keeping intact what remained of the British Empire.“A remarkable book about an important but curiously underappreciated subject: the British side of the American Revolution. With meticulous scholarship and an eloquent writing style, O'Shaughnessy gives us a fresh and compelling view of a critical aspect of the struggle that changed the world.”—Jon Meacham, author of Thomas Jefferson: The Art of PowerBook The Men Who Lost America: British Leadership, the American Revolution and the Fate of the Empire (The Lewis Walpole Series in Eighteenth-Century Culture and History) Review :
The book singles out 10 men (King George III, principle politicians, several generals, two admirals) who because of poor understanding of the colonies, poor management, poor decisions (Gen Howe stands out here), and poor logistics lost the war. The author provides the added wealth of information to better understanding the campaigns, the goals, and their failures. Because the men are each separately and in a loose chronological sequence, repetition of facts occurs. Decisions and the reasons behind them appear in the chapter on Lord North then appear later in chapters on Gen Howe and Gen Clinton. It really can't be avoided but caused me to predict what later chapters would provide. The importance of diplomacy and military action in neighboring Caribbean, Canada, Gibraltar, and India complete the author's premise that the colonies were lost because of greater territorial importance. Involvement of Spain, Holland and France created the crises which inevitably led to the independence of the 13 colonies. This is an excellent book. In form, it has a chapter each on the several British political and military leaders who played major roles in the American War for Independence. The premise, and this is not a spoiler because it is set forth in the introduction, is that Britain did not lose America because its leaders were corrupt, stupid or incompetent. Rather, the government from King George on down made assumptions on the basis of whatever information was available, much of which was inaccurate and incomplete and always out of date. Those assumptions led to policy decisions that did not turn out well. The military leaders tried their best to carry out these policies for which the available resources were totally inadequate, again with bad results. In short, in spite of or perhaps because of its world-wide empire, Britain simply did not have the military and naval manpower to successfully prosecute the war, particularly after France and Spain decided to help the Americans after Saratoga. As an aside, this book is an excellent companion to Rick Atkinson's The British are Coming.
